  1. ESCORT B-17s TO REGENSBURG
  2.  
  3. Big Week saw the Eighth Air Force
  4. concentrate its forces on the destruc-
  5. tion of the German fighter aircraft 
  6. industry.  From Feb. 19th to 25th, 1944 
  7. the bombers of the Eighth flew 3,300 
  8. sorties and unloaded 6,000 tons of 
  9. bombs.  The combined efforts of the 
  10. USAAF and RAF Bomber Command during
  11. this week dealt a devastating blow to
  12. Luftwaffe fighter production.  However,
  13. the German dispersal program, put into
  14. practice after the heavy raids in the
  15. summer of 1943, helped to nullify the
  16. effects of the damage somewhat.  The
  17. Germans had also become quite adept at
  18. salvaging machinery from the wreckage
  19. of their demolished factories.

  23. Flying with the 357th Fighter Group,
  24. you are providing close escort to B-17s 
  25. of the Third Division en route to the
  26. Messerschmitt factory at Regensburg. 
  27. You've been briefed to expect an air
  28. defense of many single-engine fighters.
